Dolphins Secure Season Opening Victory Over Albertus Magnus

New Haven, CT - The Dolphins kicked off their season the only way to do it - with a win.

The University of Mount Saint Vincent was back on the court for the first time this season, opening their 2025-26 campaign on the road against Albertus Magnus College. The Dolphins didn't let the long bus ride deter them, as they departed New Haven winners by the score of 65-60.

Junior guard Gretta Baker was the star for UMSV on the offensive end. The Portland, Oregon native finished with a team-best 19 points while shooting an even 50% from three. Baker also added six rebounds, two blocks, one steal and an assist to her opening night stat line.

Baker wasn't the only one who finished in double figures for her team. Sophomore guard Angelina Escobinas impressed with a 15 point, seven rebound, four assist performance while junior big Nailea Green was an efficient six-of-nine from the floor, good for 12 points and eight boards. Grace Giacinto compiled five points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals in her collegiate debut.

The Dolphins got off to a hot start, shooting 57% from the floor in the first quarter, good for a 10 point lead. Baker was the driving force behind the team's early success, scoring seven of the Dolphins' first 14 points.

The dominant offensive performance continued in the second quarter. The team as a whole went eight-of-13 from the floor with Green, Escobinas and AB Burnett all chipping in. The defense matched the other end for UMSV, as the Dolphins forced Albertus Magnus to shoot just 27%, with seven total forced turnovers. Baker and Giacinto picked up teals over that span.

UMSV struggled to replicate their first half success, but their early double digit lead was enough to keep the win in sight. The Eagles cut into the lead to make it a four point game, but a timely layup from Burnett combined with clutch free throws from Escobinas led the Dolphins to their first win of the season.

The Dolphins return to the Sharp Center for their home debut on Saturday against West Conn.
