Riverdale, NY - The Dolphins' four game skid has been snapped.
The University of Mount Saint Vincent played in just their second game on the Peter Jay Sharp Center floor on Wednesday afternoon in a Skyline Conference showdown against Mount Saint Mary College. The team didn't let their recent woes deter them, as they would impress on both ends of the floor en route to a 82-68 victory over the Knights, improving their Skyline record to 2-1 in the early portion of the conference slate.
UMSV outplayed Mount Saint Mary on both ends of the floor, leading in nearly all major statistical categories. The Dolphins would shoot over 50% from the floor in both the first and second halves, good for 53% for the duration of the contest.
The Dolphins jumped out to an early 11-3 lead, with
Max DePina,
Kevin Agyemang and
DJ Tucker all recording points while doing their part to put the momentum in their team's favor. The Knights would cut it to one at the 15:31 mark, but the Dolphins would respond with an 11-point run of their own. Tucker and senior
Adrian Rraci would continue to find success as starters, while freshmen
Aidan McCahey and
Blake Salice-Mitchell would combine for five points and three rebounds over that same span.
Tucker and Agyemang would find their way into the paint and go on a personal 9-0 run with the Dolphins up by 13, and both DePina and fellow transfer junior
Josiah Basket would cap off a strong first half that saw the Dolphins lead by 17 while forcing nine turnovers at the break.
Basket would take the reigns early in the second half. The West Milford, New Jersey native would score 10 of the team's first 12 points, with DePina and Tucker also registering highlight-reel level slams to the delight of the Sharp Center crowd. McCahey, Salice-Mitchell and forward Jalen Smith would all bring energy on both ends of the floor in the middle of the second half to improve UMSV's lead to 19.
To the Knights' credit, they wouldn't go away without a fight. The visitors would cut UMSV's lead to 12 before head coach
James Mooney enlisted his starting five to close things out.
Four of the five Dolphins starters went on to reach double figures. Basket led the way with 16 on six-of-nine shooting while Tucker 15 points of his own while shootin 70% from the floor. The graduate student also five assists, three rebounds and a pair of steals.
While Rraci didn't make it five starters with 10 or more points, he didn't need to. The Yonkers, New York native had a team-high six assists to go along with six boards while consistently making the offense move. Salice-Mitchell impressed in his home debut with a team-best nine rebounds while McCahey continued to be a spark plug off the bench.
The Dolphins will look to remain in the win column heading into the weekend when they challenge Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville.
