Brooklyn, NY - The University of Mount Saint Vincent was looking to get back in the win column on Thursday evening on the road in Brooklyn against St. Joseph's University. Despite dropping their most recent contest to the top seeded United States Merchant Marine Academy, the Dolphins were hoping to carry their second half success into the game. The Bears, however, put together a strong second half, resulting in a 10 point win over UMSV.
The Dolphins dropped to 7-8 overall, with the team now sporting a 5-5 record against the Skyline.
UMSV once again got off to a slow start, scoring just six first quarter points while shooting 19% from the field. The Dolphins reversed their fortunes almost immediately, as they exploded for 25 second quater points, with the team taking advantage of 17 free throw attempts. The team would combine to make 13 of them -
Erin Smith,
Gretta Baker,
Kayla Hanley,
Julia Angeles,
Nailea Green and
Grace Kennedy would all chip in in that regard.
Unfortunately for the Dolphins, the Bears would turn up the intensity on both ends of the floor, outscoring them 48-35, the key difference in the final score.
Smith, the team's lead guard, did a little bit of everything, leading the team in points scored (22), steals (four) and assists (three) while also adding six rebounds. Baker also finished in double figures with 13 points while Angeles impressed with eight points, six rebounds, three assists and a block.
JaKaia Lotz grabbed a team-best 13 rebounds, upping her average to 6.2 on the year.
The Dolphins will have to turn things around in quick fashion. They'll head out to Patchogue to challenge St. Joseph's University Long Island on Saturday.
