Riverdale, NY - The University of Mount Saint Vincent proudly announces the appointment of Jadd Schmelzter as the institution's inaugural Esports Head Coach. The University is thrilled to welcome Schmelzter to oversee its 14th varsity program, leading the department in an exciting new direction. The addition of Esports is the latest step in embracing the rapidly evolving landscape of collegiate athletics.
"Jadd is the perfect person to launch our Esports program," stated
Phil Stern, Director of Athletics and Recreation. "He has significant ties to grass roots gaming in New York City and extensive contacts throughout the country. I am thrilled to build out our new Esports Arena with his input and look forward to watching his teams compete."
"I am honored and thrilled to be named the first-ever Esports coach in UMSV history. This is a groundbreaking moment for our university, and I am deeply grateful for the trust and support from the administration," Schmeltzer told UMSVAthletics.com.
Schmeltzer's experience in the world of Esports ties directly with his current occupation of Director of Esports with the Center for Educational Innovation based out of New York City. The Tappan, New York native has his fingerprints all over CEI's Esports integration. Schmeltzer has overseen and directed all operations since the Fall of 2018 and was the driving force behind both the
Battle of the Boroughs and
Champions League Esports events while securing sponsorships from Samsung and Microsoft.
"Esports have always been a passion of mine. It's not just about playing games; it's about strategy, teamwork, and the incredible sense of community that it fosters," Schmelzter continued. "I have a particular affinity for fighting games, which require quick reflexes, strategic thinking, and a deep understanding of game mechanics. By focusing on fighting games, we aim to carve out a unique niche in the collegiate Esports scene. Being at the forefront of developing this program at UMSV is an exciting opportunity, and I am excited to bring my experience and enthusiasm to this role."
Schmelzter's innovation in the space goes further than establishing events. He has
created The Esports Mind initiative, one that teaches high school students the pathway to success in the Esports world through Social Emotional Learning.
Schmeltzer also developed the
Reachin' and Teachin' podcast centered around promoting all facets of the gaming world to peers and created a state-of-the-art gaming lab at the Summit Academy, serving as both an Esports arena, as well as a community center for students from grades six through 12.
Schmeltzer will also be tasked with developing an Esports arena on campus, in conjunction with the University's facilities and IT departments. The arena is expected to be located on the first floor of Founder's Hall. The inclusion of an on-campus Esports arena is expected to not only be utilized for our newest student-athletes, but also to host local and regional tournaments to attract new faces to campus.
Schmeltzer received his BS in Entrepreneurship from Cornell University in 2011. He was drafted by the Boston Red Sox as a pitcher in 2011 and spent five seasons playing professionally. Schmeltzer currently resides in Riverdale.
"The future of Esports at UMSV is bright, and I am excited to embark on this journey with our team, students, and the entire UMSV community," said Schmeltzer. "Together, we will build a program that not only excels in competition but also fosters personal growth, academic success, and community spirit."
