Bronx, NY - The University of Mount Saint Vincent's baseball team continued their stretch of Skyline Conference games this past weekend, with double headers against both Farmingdale State College and Manhattanville University. After splitting with the Rams before being swept by the Valiants, the Dolphins found their form on both offense and on the mound, as they went on to defeat Baruch College by the score of 8-0 in a brief break from conference competition. The victory improved UMSV's overall record to 6-12 through 18 games.
The Dolphins offense got things going early and often, putting the game out of reach for the Bearcats before they could come to the plate.
After Johnny Brucat doubled to set up an RBI situation for
Will Granata, the sophomore capitalized on the opportunity. His RBI double plated his fellow classmate to put UMSV up by one. Just one batter later, transfer
Stephen Marinez got the job done for head coach John Torres, as his single to center field drove home Granata to bring the lead to two.
The offense kept rolling from there. Senior backstop
Jason Albert reached base due to a Bearcats error, resulting in a run. Granata came through for the Dolphins once more with yet another RBI double which once again brought home Brucato. Albert would drive in two more runs in the top of the fifth before Granata capped of his impressive day with a third RBI to put the finishing touches on the offense's performance.
For how impressive the Dolphins offense was, the pitching was equally as effective.
Transfer
Alex Alvarez got the start and dominated Baruch, as the junior from Redding, California allowed just two base runners (one single and walk while) while striking out 10 batters across five shutout innings.
Joe Decandia,
Justin Dutzer,
Shawn Ryan and
Gio Zuena followed suit, as each reliever toppled the Bearcats, with Decandia and Ryan each recording a pair of strikeouts as well.
The Dolphins will look to return to the Skyline win column starting on Saturday in a double header against Old Westbury on Long Island.
