Brooklyn, NY - For the second straight season, the University of Mount Saint Vincent's men's volleyball team is Skyline Conference tournament bound. Their spot in the playoffs was all but a formality, but the Dolphins officially earned the fifth spot after splitting a tri-match on the final day of the regular season against St. Joseph's University Brooklyn and St. Joseph's University Long Island. Saturday's results gave UMSV five conference wins in their final six tries, leading ot a 10-8 record against the Skyline and an 11-12 overall record.
While both outcomes resulted in the ultimate goal of fighting for a Skyline title, there were still outstanding performances by the Dolphins, specifically in the contest against the Bears. Senior hitter
James Rose capped off a strong three-year career with a fantastic performance, collecting 28 kills in the victory. So, too, did sophomore setter
Matthew Barrancos, who finished his impressive second year in Riverdale with a career-high 47 assists in just 51 setting opportunities. Senior
Kyle Thompson finished in double figures in kills with 15 eight digs, two blocks and two service aces.
Speaking of Blocks, freshman
Yestro Luciano Jr. impressed in front of the net with six blocks of his own, also a career-high for the youngster.
Ronny Lopez Jr. added six kills of his own while
Kevin Erhand led the charge with an even 20 digs. Both Barrancos and captain libero
Felix Paulino added 14 digs apiece as well.
The story now starts in Purchase, as the Dolphins are set to go head-to-head with the Panthers this Tuesday at 7 PM. Purchase College emerged victorious in both regular season contests, with the first set being a five-set thriller. The matchup will be a fantastic one between two teams vying for a semifinal matchup, and it will be live on UMSVAthletics.com in just two days.
