Staten Island, NY - The University of Mount Saint Vincent played New York University for the second and third time over the course of 48 hours on Sunday, completing their season series against the team. Unfortunately for the Dolphins, they dropped both contests to NYU by the scores of 6-3 and 9-1, bringing their overall record to 2-5 this season. Despite the losses against the tough NYU program, the Dolphins will look to regroup against both Lehman College and Kean University before opening up Skyline Conference play against Yeshiva University on March 19.
The Dolphins did get off on the right foot, thanks in large part to sophomore
Johnny Brucato and his speed. The second-year shortstop reached base with a walk in his first at-bat of the day and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Brucato would then go on to steal third and score on an error, putting UMSV up 1-0 early. NYU would go on to plate all six of their runs over the first three innings of action. Sophomore
Michael Iocco got the start for head coach John Torres and allowed six earned runs on seven hits in his three innings of work.
The story of the game for UMSV was senior hurler
Ivan Navarro, who entered the game in relief of Iocco and shut down the NYU offense. Navarro threw five scoreless innings, allowing just two hits over that span. The Dolphins offense showed signs of life in the sixth, with
JT Jimenez tripling home
Drew Knight and
Dom Porto driving home Jimenez, but it wasn't enough to overcome the early deficit.
The Dolphins struggled on both ends of the field in game two, with NYU jumping ahead 6-0 after just two innings. The offense only registered two hits in the contest, with Knight and senior
Jason Albert both going 1-for-2 at the plate. The duo also walked one time each. Like Navarro in the first game, the Dolphins saw another reliever shine in the effort. This time it was freshman
Tyler Kropp, who scattered one hit and one strikeout across two innings in his collegiate debut.
UMSV goes toe-to-toe with the Lightning this Friday at 3 PM in the Bronx.
