Dolphins Fall To Christopher Newport In First Round Of NCAA Tournament

Newport News, VA - The University of Mount Saint Vincent punched their ticket to the NCAA Division-III Championship Tournament after defeating Manhattanville in the Skyline Conference final and drew Christopher Newport University, a Division-III powerhouse program out of Newport News, Virginia. Despite the tall task, the Dolphins came ready play - and despite the outcome, the program's second ever appearance in the national tournament was the cherry on top of a season full of great moments.

Magan Jackson capped off her first season with UMSV - one that saw her earn First Team All-Skyline honors - in grand fashion. The sophomore led all Dolphins with 16 points while swiping three steals and grabbing three boards in the process. Kira Villegas, a Second Team All-Conference selection, added 11 points, five rebounds, four steals and an assist against the Captains, capping off a terrific career in Riverdale. Floor general Kayla Hanley was as efficient as it got against CNU, shooting four-of-five from the floor, good for 10 points.

It was all smiles in the post game press conference, one that featured head coach Maria Nardulli, alongside Jackson and Hanley. The trio harped on how far the team had come this season, and how they're already looking forward to running it back next year. The Dolphins are losing top talent - including Villegas and the Skyline Conference tournament's Most Outstanding Player in Amber Been, and captains Melanieann Broderick and Manolia Argyros - but Nardulli is building upon her already impressive roster with a strong class of transfers and freshmen, giving the team the necessary ammo to make another run at a title next season.

Hanley and Jackson are joined by Ariella Johnson and Anastasia Davis, two transfers who played major roles throughout the team's championship run. JaKaia Lotz, Julia Angeles, Sofia Marcos, Shamoni Berrios, Isabelle Bagon, Kyla McLean and Lexi Tucker will look to take a step forward as upper classwomen, while the freshmen unit of Nailea Green, Olivia Dutzer, Casey Mulvey and Michaela Ligon have a season of championship basketball under their belts.

The season ended in Virginia on Saturday night. But in many ways, it's only the beginning of what's to come for the conference's premiere program.
