Riverdale, NY - The University of Mount Saint Vincent's women's basketball team emerged victorious in their fourth game in their last five tries, defeating Skyline Conference rival Sarah Lawrence College 52-47 inside the Sharp Center. The game wasn't the prettiest for a Dolphins team that has found a ton of success this season, but their grind-out win was a testament to the team being able to overcome adversity and continue to post wins on their schedule. The victory improved UMSV's overall record to 16-5, as well as a 12-4 mark against conference competition.
The win also put the team in sole possession of third place in the standings with just two weeks to go before the Skyline tournament.
The Dolphins struggled offensively throughout the course of the game, shooting just 21% across the first three quarters of action. The defense, however, was a different story. UMSV hounded the Gryphons offense all game long, forcing Sarah Lawrence to turn the ball over 26 times throughout the game. Seven different Dolphins recorded at least one steal, with senior guard
Amber Been leading the way with a team-best five.
Melanieann Broderick came off the bench and had three of her own while
Kira Villegas and
Anastasia Davis had two apiece.
The Dolphins trailed by three points heading into the final quarter of action, but fortunately for UMSV, it was also when they put together their best effort.
Broderick's third steal of the contest came during the first possession of the fourth, and her outlet pass to
Magan Jackson led to a bucket by
JaKaia Lotz to cut Sarah Lawrence's lead to one point. The Dolphins would then go on a quick 5-0 run, with Jackson converting a layup attempt while Been hit a jump shot and knocked down a pair of free throws in the ensuing possession. The team would stay on top for the rest of the fourth, with Villegas,
Shamoni Berrios and
Sofia Marcos each scoring clutch points in the paint.
Been's three point conversion and going two-for-two from the line in the final two minutes put the Dolphins up for good, while Villegas iced the game with a block with just seconds remaining.
Been finished her night leading the Dolphins in both points (13) and rebounds (10) while adding three assists in addition to her steals total. Jacksom matched Been's scoring number with 13 of her own while Villegas added eight points and nine boards. UMSV as a whole outpaced the Gryphons in points in the paint, points off turnovers, bench points and fast break points, among other categories.
The Dolphins will have the rest of the week off before kicking off a three game road trip on Saturday. They'll start at St. Joseph's University Long Island before facing off against both Manhattanville College and Farmingdale State College next week.
