Riverdale, NY - The University of Mount Saint Vincent had one of the best comebacks you'll ever see on Tuesday night, and it came at the perfect time. Trailing by as many as 17 points against Farmingdale State College, the Dolphins outscored the Rams 29-11 in a fast paced fourth quarter to move on to the Skyline Conference semifinal game against Mount Saint Mary College on Thursday night. The Sharp Center crowd propelled the Dolphins in their comeback, as their collective energy pushed UMSV in their comeback attempt.
It was a struggle for the Dolphins on both sides of the ball over the course of three quarters. The team shot just 32% from the floor over that span, while the Rams lit it up from three, knocking down nine-of-14 from beyond the arc. The Dolphins also turned the ball over 13 times as well, giving the Rams a 57-44 edge heading into the fourth quarter.
But for UMSV, that's where things just got started.
The Rams lead improved to 17 when they scored two pointers in back-to-back possessions to kick off the fourth, but it was then when the Dolphins began their comeback. Starting at the 7:44 mark, it was graduate student
Kira Villegas who converted a pair of free throw attempts to make it a 15 point game. Just two possessions later, the Dolphins would go on a 10-0 run, seven of which came from sophomore
Ariella Johnson, who in the midst of the run knocked down UMSV's only three pointer of the night.
Freshman forward
Nailea Green made her presence known throughout the tail end of that run, as she blocked two shots, leading to transition baskets from
Magan Jackson and
Amber Been. The Dolphins would then take their first lead of the night when Johnson converted her two free throw attempts after getting fouled on a jump shot, giving UMSV a one point lead. The combination of Villegas and Been closed out the game, making all seven of the team's final free throws of the evening, resulting in a 73-68 win.
Johnson's 18 points and consistency in the transition game were both major reasons behind the victory. Villegas and Been stepped up on both ends of the floor in tremendous fashion to close things out, as they scored 21 and 20 points, respectively, while combining for 11 steals. Been also added 12 boards and five assists to her stat line. Jackson finished with 10 points of her own while
Kayla Hanley and
Melanieann Broderick had 15 rebounds between the two.
The Dolphins will look to reverse the regular season finishes against the Knights this coming Thursday in Newburgh.
