Brooklyn, NY - The University of Mount Saint Vincent's men's volleyball team secured their first win of the season on Saturday afternoon after taking on both the Pratt Institute and King's College of Pennsylvania in a tri-match hosted by the Cannoneers. The Dolphins emerged victorious in game one against Pratt, winning in four sets (25-19, 30-28, 19-25, 25-19) before dropping straight sets to Monarchs (25-10, 25-17, 25-14). The Dolphins are now 1-2 in the first week of their season.
Senior outside hitter
Kevin Erhand dominated for a Dolphins team that put up a ton of offensive numbers against the Cannoneers. The Rockaway Beach, New York native compiled 20 total kills and five aces, good for a whopping 25.5 points. Both
James Rose and
Olatomiwa Ibitayo impressed on the hitting front as well, collecting 11 and eight kills, respectively.
Freshman Yestro Castro Jr. added six kills of his own while sophomore setter Matthew Barranacos collected 43 assists in the win. Libero
Felix Paulino led the way with 19 digs to go along with two assists. and
Ronny Lopez Jr. manned the middle of the net with four combined blocks.
The Dolphins didn't find the same success in game two, but still saw impressive play from the team. Erhand followed up his first game with a nine kill performance, while Rose and Ibitayo combined for nine of their own. Barranacos (18 assists) and Paulino (11 digs) continued to shine in their respective roles as well.
UMSV will turn their attention to John Jay College, who they'll take on this coming Saturday on the road.
