Riverdale, NY - The Dolphins are back in the win column.
The University of Mount Saint Vincent rebounded in impressive fashion on Tuesday evening. After a tough loss to DeSales University over the weekend, the Dolphins turned right back around and had one of their better offensive performances of the season, cruising to a double digit victory over Sarah Lawrence College.
The win improved UMSV's record to 5-4 on the year.
The Dolphins got off to a slow start, falling into an early 11-3 hole. They wouldn't let the deficit deter them, however, as they would respond with a 12-0 run while find success on both ends of the floor.
Transfer
Sharon Brown got things going, knocking down a jumper to make it 11-5 Gryphons. Freshman
Grace Kennedy would go on a 4-0 run on her own, knocking down four consecutive free throw attempts. After UMSV caused a Sarah Lawrence turnover,
Erin Smith would knock down a big three pointer, with Kennedy following suit in the following possession to complete the run and take the 15-11 lead.
From there on out, it was all Dolphins. UMSV would shoot 53% to close out the first half, including an impressive four-of-seven from three. The Dolphins would allow just 13 points compared to 24 of their own, with transfer
Gretta Baker accounting for nine of those points.
The dominance was apparent over the final 20 minutes of play. UMSV would allow just three total points in the third and 14 total in the second half while scoring 36 of their own. The Dolphins offense was moving the ball early and often, picking up an impressive 19 assists, with Brown, Kennedy and
Kayla Hanley all impressing in the passing game.
Smith went on a personal 10-0 run in the third quarter, shifting the momentum fully into the Dolphins favor.
Julia Angeles,
Angelina Escobinas and
Ashley Marrocco each impressed in the final minutes to secure the win for the team.
Smith scored a game-high 20 points, her fourth game this season scoring 20 or more. Baker finished in double figures with 13, and Kennedy rounded out the double figures scoring with 13 points along with seven boards and a pair of assists.
Brown led the way with 11 rebounds while being a pest on defense. Hanley, meanwhile, continued to do a little bit of everything for UMSV with seven assists, five rebounds, two steals and two blocks.
With the win, the Dolphins improved to 3-2 against the conference. They'll have a major Skyline showdown on the horizon at home this weekend against St. Joseph's University Long Island.
