Box Score 3 Bronxville, NY - The University of Mount Saint Vincent's men's basketball team kicked off a new era of the institution in a major way on Tuesday evening. The Dolphins were victorious in the first contest ever since the change from College to University on the road, defeating Sarah Lawrence College by the score of 72-62. The win propelled UMSV's conference record to an even .500 through four games.
The win also comes off the heels of a successful New Year's Eve road trip in Massachusetts, where the Dolphins reached the finals of the Naismith Classic Tournament, hosted by Springfield College. UMSV standouts
Joshua Cabezudo and
DJ Tucker were both named to the All-Tournament team for their efforts in the weekend of action.
On Tuesday, however, the Dolphins had to overcome a Gryphons squad that came out ready go. UMSV shot just 32% from the floor in the first half, including knocking down just three of their 12 free throw attempts. Despite the offensive struggles, UMSV held their own on the other end of the floor, forcing 11 Sarah Lawrence turnovers while scoring 28 points over that same span. Six different Dolphins scored over the first 20 minutes of action, with Cabezudo and Tucker picking up where they left off in Massachusetts with 19 combined points.
The second half saw UMSV turn the tied offensively, as they upped their output to 43% shooting while scoring 56% from three and 69% from the line.
Kevin Agyemang was a force on both ends of the floor in the second half. The junior transfer not only reached double figures with a three-ball and a layup in traffic in back-to-back possessions, but put a perfectly placed pass on an alley-oop to Tucker while also swiping four steals.
Freshman
Connor Wein and senior
Adrian Rraci would both knock down clutch shots from beyond the arc and from the free throw line, respectively, to help wrap up the victory.
Four separate Dolphins will reach double figures, including Cabezudo, whose 27 points were not only a game-high, but just two points shy of a season-best mark. The lead guard also added six boards, three assists, two steals and a block in the winning effort. Wein finished with 14 points on 50% shooting while Agyemang swiped eight steals to go along with his 13 points. Tucker impressed on the boards with a team-best 14.
The Dolphins will go head-to-head with Columbia University in a mid-season exhibition before taking on Old Westbury this coming Saturday.
