Box Score Purchase, NY - The University of Mount Saint Vincent's women's basketball team has taken the Skyline Conference by storm in the 2023-24 season, and that theme continued into Wednesday night's slate of games. The Dolphins were on the road, traveling to nearby Purchase College to take on the Panthers with the hopes of winning their seventh conference matchup in eight tries this season. UMSV did just that, as the Dolphins walked away with a 79-45 victory after four different players reached double figures. The win put the Dolphins in first place in the conference standings with a pivotal contest taking place this weekend.
The Dolphins and Panthers went toe-to-toe throughout the first quarter of action, with UMSV leading by just six points at the conclusion of it. From there, however, the Dolphins saw their offensive output explode, as they went on to score 24 points in the second and 23 points in the third. The third quarter was especially impressive, with UMSV posting a field goal percentage of nearly 63% over that span.
For all the success the Dolphins found offensively, they did so on the other end of the floor as well.
Maria Nardulli's swarming defense forced Purchase to shoot just 26% from the floor throughout the game, including a a 31% mark from three. UMSV also combined for 25 steals; sophomore
Magan Jackson led the way with five of her own, while
Kira Villegas,
JaKaia Lotz,
Amber Been and
Anastasia Davis each had at least three swipes of their own.
In addition to Jackson's team-high in steals, she also led the way in points with 20, bringing her season total to 15.7 on the year. Forwards
Ariella Johnson and
JaKaia Lotz both impressed, scoring 14 and 12 points while grabbing eight and six boards, respectively. Villegas added 10 points of her own.
The Dolphins will have the tough task of facing off against a St. Joseph's University Long Island team on Saturday that owns a 7-2 conference record of their own. The Golden Eagles make their way to Riverdale for a tip-off scheduled for 12 PM.
