Riverdale, NY - The College of Mount Saint Vincent's men's soccer team was back on their home turf on Wednesday and looking to avenge their opening season loss against Yeshiva University. It was a defensive battle throughout, but the John Jay Bloodhounds scored a late game goal, with the final score tallying 1-0.
The Dolphins are now 0-2 to kick off their 2023 campaign, with a matchup against the University of Hartford looming.
CMSV led the way on both sides of the ball, including total shots (21-11), shots on goal (13-6), corner kicks (8-3) and fouls (22-14). Their aggressive play on throughout gave the Dolphins plenty of chances, but the Bloodhounds goaltender had other plans.
The team's best chance came almost immediately after John Jay scored in the 75th minute. Sophomore striker Oscar Billman took the ball from midfield, worked his way past the defender and put a strong crossing pass on the foot of freshman Sebastian Mesa. John Jay's keeper made a terrific save, all but icing the game in favor of his team.
Billman led the way with eight shots and four on goal, with senior Ian Lamas adding four of his own. Senior goalkeeper Joel Luna got his first start in net this season and impressed with five saves.
The Hawks make their way to Riverdale on Saturday as head coach Johnny Raj looks for his first collegiate win. Stay tuned to CMSVAthletics.com for all the action.
