Riverdale, NY - After a tough opening loss to Vassar College, the College of Mount Saint Vincent's women's soccer team took to Marillac Field for the first time this season, playing host to FDU-Florham in a non-conference showdown. Despite a tough battle and a late surge, The Dolphins will have to wait another day for their first win of the year, as they fell to the Devils by the score of 2-1. The lone goal for the Dolphins came off the foot of freshman
Caitlyn Thompson, who scored her first collegiate point late in the second half.
The Devils struck first close to the midway point of the first half, but CMSV continued their push into the opposing zone for the duration of the half. The Dolphins had multiple chances to get one past FDU's goalkeeper, with Thompson,
Alicia Rodriguez and
Brittany Boyle all registering shots on goal.
The physicality of the contest saw an uptick in the second half after FDU scored their second goal. That play, however, worked in CMSV's favor. After a Devils defender received a red card, Thompson was awarded the penalty shot and converted to put her team on the board. The Dolphins continued to push with the woman advantage, but FDU's back line held firm to close it out.
Brooke Frierson received her second straight start in net and registered 10 saves in the afternoon affair. Thompson took a team high six shots, with half of them coming on goal.
Stuart Dick's team will get five days to regroup before facing off against Kean University on Marillac Field this coming Friday.
