Throgs Neck, NY - The College of Mount Saint Vincent baseball team traveled to Maritime College to host the SUNY Purchase Panthers in the first round of the Skyline Conference Championship Tournament on Wednesday evening. It was the definition of a pitchers duel, with both starters going the distance and the offense limited. Unfortunately, the Dolphins dropped the game by a score of 2-1 to the Panthers.
The Dolphins sent their ace Andrew Geiger out to the mound in what was a must win game for them. Geiger turned in without a doubt his best performance of his career at CMSV, but also arguably the best pitching performance in Dolphins history. Geiger tossed a complete game where he allowed two runs on five hits and struck out an extraordinary 17 batters. Geiger struck out the side three different times in the game, which is remarkable, especially in a playoff game.
The Dolphins started off the scoring in the second inning with a Jason Albert solo shot to give the Dolphins a 1-0 lead. The middle innings of the game saw no scoring, until the sixth inning. The Panthers scored one run at that point on an RBI double to knot the game at one a piece. In the bottom half of the sixth inning, the Dolphins had their best chance at scoring all game. The Dolphins had bases loaded with one out, but unfortunately could not plate a run and stranded three runners.
In the eighth inning, the Panthers scored another run on a solo shot to make it 2-1 and the Dolphins would lose by that score. A positive for the Dolphins offensively today was freshman standout Danny DiNorcia. DiNorcia went 2-for-3 with a walk, reaching base three times in his four plate appearances.
Despite the great season they had, the Dolphins fell short today in their lone playoff game this year. However, there is a lot to look forward to for the baseball program in the future. Returning three seniors and a whole new freshmen class coming in, the Dolphins will only go up from here and build on the amazing season they had and push for a Skyline Conference Championship next year.
