Dolphins Lose First Half Lead, Drop Conference Matchup To Panthers

Purchase, NY - It was a tale of two halves for a Mount Saint Vincent lacrosse team that entered Tuesday looking to pick up their first conference win of the 2023 season. After playing a dominant brand of lacrosse in the first half, Purchase College stepped up and outscored the Dolphins 11-3 in the final 30 minutes of play, resulting in a 14-9 loss.

CMSV is now 0-2 against Skyline Conference opponents while sporting an overall record of 4-6.

The Dolphins excelled on both sides of the ball to kick off the contest. Controlling the possession battle, CMSV's two first quarter goals, scored by Ryan Jean-Pharuns and Joseph Santana, was enough to give the team a 2-0 lead after one. The defense was stout on the other end of the field, with the young unit causing 14 total turnovers while senior goaltender Sawyer Davis compiled 10 first half saves.

The Panthers would score twice in the second quarter, but CMSV's offense responded quickly, as Renee Alamo, Giovanni Jean-Pharuns, Isaac Parsons and Albert Dore each converted shot attempts. Andrew Dzubak would collect three assists while defenseman Adrian Guillermo would add a helper on the fourth goal.

Both teams would enter halftime with CMSV leading by three goals and confidence across the roster.

Unfortunately for the Dolphins, the second half didn't go as well as the first.

The Panthers would go on to outscore CMSV 11-3 in the final two quarters of action, with Purchase adding eight goals in the fourth quarter alone. Jean-Pharuns, Dzubak and Jacob Cochran would add would to the scoring column for James Fitzgerald's team, but it wasn't enough to stop Purchase from walking away with the win.

Guillermo had a strong contest for the Dolphins, adding four ground balls and three caused turnovers to his assist. Cochran would lead the way with five ground balls while Dzubak added to his team leading points total with five more on Tuesday. Davis finished his afternoon with 19 saves on 33 shots on goal.

The Dolphins next match up against the United States Merchant Marine Academy, who they take on in King's Point this weekend.
