Newburgh, NY - The six seeded Mount Saint Vincent women's basketball team took on the three seeded Mount Saint Mary's Knights in the Skyline Conference quarterfinals in Newburgh on Tuesday evening. The Dolphins left it all out on the court, but ultimately lost the game by a score of 65-57. The Dolphins finished the year with an overall record of 11-13 and conference record of 7-11, good enough for a spot in the postseason tournament.
The Dolphins got off to a hot start, shooting 47% from the field and scoring 16 points in the first quarter before hitting a dry spell in the second quarter. The team scored just three points, ending the half down 16 points.
The second half is where
Maria Nardulli's team really turned it up on the offensive end. The Dolphins outscored the Knights 38-30 in the second half and almost mounted an extraordinary comeback. The Dolphins pair of senior guards
Kira Villegas and
Amber Been were a big part of the Dolphins success, with Villegas scoring 23 points in her final collegiate game and had seven rebounds to add to her stat line. Been on the other hand put together a stellar 17 points, eight rebounds and four assists to round out her 2023 campaign and hopes to build on her spectacular season next year.
Junior guard
Kayla Hanley was also a key contributor to the Dolphins second half resurgence, Hanley had two steals to aid the Dolphins on defense and five assists to get her team going on the offensive side of the ball.
The Dolphins impressive season sadly comes to an end, but they look to build on it next season with a majority of their key roster returning with new talent rounding out the team.
