Riverdale, NY - Freshman
Connor Wein was the driving force behind the College of Mount Saint Vincent's men's basketball team when they snapped their recent losing streak and defeated St. Joseph's University Brooklyn at home on Wednesday evening. The first-year guard from Thiells, New York posted a career-high 20 points and was a key catalyst behind the team's second half comeback. The win improved CMSV's conference record to an even .500 in the early going, with a pivotal showdown with Purchase College looming this coming weekend.
The Dolphins starters struggled on both ends of the floor to begin the action, with the team trailing by 10 with just six minutes passing on the clock. Head coach
James Mooney looked to his bench to turn the tide, and the second unit did just that.
Kevin Agyemang,
Sean Goodwin,
Gerard Novello,
Louis Vidal and
Gurjot Singh provided energy on both ends of the floor, and baskets in consecutive possessions from Agyemang, Novello and Vidal cut the deficit to just three points.
Despite the early success from the bench, the Bears would right the ship themselves, as their lead ballooned to 11 points at the break.
Mooney would stagger his lineup for the remainder of the game, and Wein - who received just the second start of his young career - took advantage of the opportunity. The first-year Dolphin kicked off the half with five consecutive points to begin the team's comeback. From there, Agyemang, Vidal and standout
DJ Tucker would each get on the board, with defense on the other end also playing a role in making it a 44-40 score with 14:18 left in regulation. Tucker and Vidal would combine for six points in three straight possessions, while an Agyemang three would give CMSV their first lead since the early portions of the first half.
The foursome of Wein, Ageymang, Vidal and Tucker would continue their impressive games throughout the second. All four would keep their team in the game, as Vidal was a force on the boards, Agyemang knocked down clutch shots while Tucker played strong defense. Wein would shine from beyond the arc, knocking down threes in two straight possessions, leading to CMSV's lead to jump to five. The Bears would answer with a three of their own, but so, too, would Wein, who finished the contest perfect from three. Tucker and reigning Second Team All-Skyline recipient
Joshua Cabezudo would ice the game for the Dolphins at the charity stripe, resulting in the win.
Wein added seven rebounds to his point total, while Vidal finished with nine points and eight boards of his own. Agyemang posted his first double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds on six of 14 shooting while Tucker was all over the stat sheet with 13 points, six boards, three assists and a pair of steals.
With the Panthers coming to Riverdale on Saturday, the Dolphins have a great chance to keep the momentum in their favor.
