Riverdale, NY - The College of Mount Saint Vincent's women's soccer team capped off their 2023 season the only way they could: being named 2023 Skyline Conference champions. Head coach
Stuart Dick and the Dolphins put together one of the most impressive regular seasons in program history and took that into the conference tournament, where they combined to beat Mount Saint Mary College and Farmingdale State College 10-0 before shutting out the United States Merchant Marine Academy in the final by the score of 1-0.
CMSV wraps up their season winners in 10 of their 18 regular season games before completing the sweep in the postseason.
The atmosphere was at its best down on Marillac Field, with a crowd over nearly 1,700 fans in attendance to witness the showdown with the Mariners. The two sides tied in the regular season, and the back and forth play was exactly the same in the championship round. USMMA played a physical brand of soccer in the first half, committing eight of the 11 fouls called. CMSV, however, didn't let it deter their game plan, as they controlled the possession battle while peppering 13 shots over the same span.
There was no surprise as to who would be put CMSV on the board first. Standout freshman
Caitlyn Thompson capped off her tremendous first campaign in Riverdale with a beautiful goal from far outside the box, to give her team the only goal they'd need all day. Thompson finished her first ever collegiate postseason tournament with four goals and an assist.
The Dolphins remained in control for the duration of the first half, but the Mariners came out firing over the final 45 minutes of play. Upping their offensive intensity, the Dolphins defense was able to match it, as
Arianna Morales,
Lily Ostiguy,
Cameron Cruz and
Gisselle Soria each played tremendous shutdown soccer.
Javiera Sanchez was once again the star of the show in net, as her 10th shutout of the 2023 season game at the most important time. The sophomore's 0.11 goals against average for a season is now a program record.
Despite the score, the Dolphins had additional chances, including a thwarted penalty kick attempt and a missed doorstep goal. At the other end, Sanchez answered each Mariners attempt, as she recorded three saves in the victory.
Sophomore captain
Victoria Gamarra was awarded Most Outstanding Player honors after being a dominant force up front, all the while setting the tone offensively for the Dolphins.
Despite the celebration, the season did not end on Saturday. Stay tuned to CMSVAthletics.com to find out who CMSV will take on in the NCAA National Tournament, with the selection show taking place on Monday.
