Bronxville, NY - The College of Mount Saint Vincent's men's basketball team returned to their winning ways on the road on Saturday, defeating local rival Sarah Lawrence College thanks to a last minute defensive stop by the score of 58-56. The Dolphins, who are now 4-4 against the Skyline Conference this season, rebounded nicely after dropping their contest to the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Tuesday.
James Mooney's squad are now winners in three of their last four Skyline matchups.
The Dolphins/Gryphons matchup was tightly contested from the first whistle until the last. The score was tied six different times in the 40 minutes of action while each sides largest lead was just three points. CMSV jumped out to an early six point lead as the ball flowed on offense.
Dillon Hod,
George Mejia and
Dan Porcic scored in consecutive possessions, with lead guard
Joshua Cabezudo dishing out assists to Hod and Mejia.
While the starters did their job, it was the bench who impressed once entering the contest. The Dolphins' second unit outscored Sarah Lawrence's 11-6 in the first half, with freshman reserve
Jalen Lewis scoring all seven of his points at that time. The defense, too, impressed, as CMSV forced seven first half turnovers while forcing the Gryphons to shoot just 35% from the floor. Both sides battling closely led to a one point lead by Sarah Lawrence at halftime.
The theme of defense continued into the second half, with both teams shooting below 40%. Despite the overall struggles, the Dolphins received a boost from standout junior
DJ Tucker, who scored 10 of his 11 points in the second half, including a go-ahead three pointer with just 34 seconds remaining in the contest. The Gryphons had a chance to take the lead with time expiring, but Mejia blocked his fourth shot of the game at the rim to keep the Dolphins on top. Sarah Lawrence grabbed the offensive board but missed their final shot attempt, giving the Dolphins the win.
The trio of Porcic, Cabezudo and Tucker led the way offensively, with each scoring in double figures. Tucker also paced the Dolphins with 12 boards while Cabezudo was the team's assist leader with four. Mejia added six rebounds and four blocks to the stat line while
Sean Goodwin came off the bench and had four boards, an assist and a block.
Next up for the Dolphins is Manhattanville College. They'll take on the Valiants on the road this coming Wednesday.
