Riverdale, NY – After defeating Old Westbury on the road over the weekend, the College of Mount Saint Vincent's women's basketball team looked to make it two straight against St. Joseph's University Brooklyn at home. The team's sixth win of the season will have to come at another date, as the Bears defeated the Dolphins inside the Sharp Center by 16 points.
The Dolphins struggled offensively to start the game. The team made just four of their 20 shot attempts, good for a field goal percentage of 20% in the first 10 minutes of play. CMSV did, however, jump out to their first lead of the contest when senior guard
Amber Been knocked down a free throw attempt to make it a 5-4 game.
Despite their shortcomings, the Dolphins showed glimpses of a strong offense. It was most apparent when sophomore
Shania Wolfe-White dished out an incredibly strong assist to a crashing Mel Broderick, who converted the shot attempt. The team's defense struggled due to fouls, with five team fouls resulting in a pair of points for the Bears.
The second quarter started off in a better fashion. The Dolphins generated two steals in St. Joe's first two possessions, with Broderick scoring off both steals. CMSV also got to the free throw line at a strong pace and made five of six shots in the process. The team, however, fell back into their first quarter struggles, and the Bears capitalized, resulting an eight point half time lead for the road squad.
The Dolphins did their best to chip away at the deficit, but for every basket scored, the Bears seemingly had a response. CMSV saw their offense go to another level in the fourth, as the team as a whole shot 50% from the floor. But it was too little, too late, thanks in large part to the Bears' lead jumping up to 15 points at the end of the third. The final score was 71-55 in favor of St. Joe's Brooklyn.
Been nearly put together a triple-double performance for
Maria Nardulli's team. The Bronx native led the team in points (15), rebounds (nine) and assists (eight) while adding two steals. Broderick wasn't far behind with a 14-point, nine rebound performance of he own while
Kira Villegas added 14 points, eight boards and a pair of steals. Freshman
Julia Angeles had eight points of her own.
The Dolphins will look to get back on track this coming Friday when they challenge Sarah Lawrence College in yet another how Skyline battle.
