Dolphins Show Out On Home Floor, Cruise To First Conference Win Over Bears

Riverdale, NY -  The Dolphins put a rough patch behind them on Wednesday evening when they hosted St. Joseph's College Brooklyn for their second conference game of the season and cruised to a 87-64 victory. Junior DJ Tucker starred in the team's terrific overall contest, leading the way in scoring while putting together two highlight reel dunks.

CMSV now sits at 2-5 on the season with a .500 record against the Skyline.

The Dolphins didn't let their loss to Yeshiva deter them, as the team came out ready to go in the first half. The new-look starting lineup clicked, with transfers Tucker and Joshua Cabezudo pacing the offense. The duo combined for the Dolphins' first 14 points of the game, with Tucker adding a pair of assists as well. The Bears, however, would battle on their end of the floor, bringing the game to a one point difference at the 7:20 left in the half.

From there, CMSV exploded offensively, going on a 17-0 run over a six minute span. Tucker led the way with the first six points of the run, with Cabezudo, Aaron Darab, Jalen Smith and Haven Smith all adding points to the board. The Dolphins went into the break with a 37-20 advantage.

For all the offensive success in the first 20 minutes of action, there was even more in the final 20 minutes of action. The Dolphins exploded offensively, shooting 61% from the floor and 58% from three, an outpouring that was only behind the Hunter game earlier this season.

CMSV would pick up where they left off, with Dillon Hod opening the second half with a drive to the basket and a layup conversion off an assist from Darab. After the Bears scored in consecutive possessions, the Dolphins quickly answered with a Hod three pointer and Smith jumper, with both baskets getting the crowd on their feet. The Dolphins fed off the energy of the Peter Jay Sharp faithful, with the team going on yet another offensive run. This time, Tucker led the charge with one-handed slam, followed up by points from Hod, Cabezudo and Darab, making it 57-25 in favor of CMSV.

The fans would once again give a loud applause garnered at Tucker, who stole a Bears pass, leading to a thunderous windmill dunk to officially put the game out of reach for St. Joseph's Brooklyn. Darab, Sean Goodwin and Jack Connolley would all knock down shots from beyond the arc with time running down on the scoreboard.

Despite the highlights on offense, the Dolphins defense was just as important in the win. The team forced the Bears to cause 18 turnovers, while St. Joe's shot just 38% from the field for the game.

Tucker's 19 points were both a game and season high for the Boynton Beach, Florida native, who also added five assists, four rebounds, two steals and a block in 27 minutes of action. Cabezudo had 15 points and six rebounds of his own while shooting six of 13 from the floor, with Darab also finishing in double figures with 11 points.

It wasn't just the aforementioned threesome who aided in the win. Smith, the freshman from the Bronx, had one of the best performances of his young career with eight points and five boards while Hod (eight points) and Goodwin (seven points) chipped in as well.

The Dolphins will look to carry their momentum into the weekend when they head to Long Island to take on Farmingdale State College.
