Dolphins Go Toe To Toe With Maccabees, Lose In Overtime

Box Score

Riverdale, NY - The Dolphins overcame their early struggles to force overtime, but it wasn't enough to take their first conference game of the 2022 season, as the team fell to Yeshiva University 52-51.

The Dolphins struggled offensively in the first quarter of action. The team as a whole shot just 20% from the floor, with senior guard Kira Villegas scored four of CMSV's eight points. Fortunately for the Dolphins, they did find success on the defensive side of the game. The team forced the Maccabees to turn the ball over six times, five of which were stolen passes. Villegas paced the Dolphins with two swipes.

The issues persisted into the second quarter, with the Dolphins scoring just four more points, the first of which came with 3:31 left on the clock. CMSV went just two of 15 from the floor and went into the locker rooms trailing by 11 points.

The Dolphins chipped away at Yeshiva's lead, thanks in large part to a strong performance from senior guard Amber Been. Been was all over the floor, scoring five of the team's seven points, including recording a rebound, an assist and a steal.

The Dolphins continued putting the pressure on their opponents, with Hanley knocking down two big threes to cut into the deficit. CMSV took their first lead of the game with less than three minutes to go, when Been and Shania Wolfe-White converted layup attempts in back-to-back possessions. Those baskets were good enough to make it a 36-32 game in favor of the Dolphins going into the fourth.

The Dolphins went on to play a steady brand of basketball in the final quarter, but traded baskets with Yeshiva to keep things close. A steal at half court from Villegas led to a layup, tying things up and eventually forcing overtime. The two sides continued to trade baskets, but it was Yeshiva who made enough clutch plays to ensure the win.

For the Dolphins, Villegas had a strong performance with a team best 18 points to go along with 12 rebounds and four steals. Been had a double double of her own with 13 points and 15 boards while Hanley 11 and seven of her own.

The Dolphins will look to right the ship with in their next matchup against Sarah Lawrence College.
