Box Score Riverdale, NY - The Dolphins opened Skyline Conference play in a rematch of the 2021 semifinal on Monday night, taking on Yeshiva University at home. CMSV looked the part of a conference contender in the first half, but the Maccabees proved to be too much to overcome. The Dolphins fell to 1-5 on the season after the 84-63 loss.
The first half was full of energy and competitiveness from both teams. Sophomore guard Dillon Hod was all over the court in the early goings, grabbing rebounds and diving for loose balls. Despite the Dolphins trailing, junior transfer Joshua Cabezudo was a force on the boards, grabbing four in the first 10 minutes of play. The infectious play was passed on to the bench, with freshman Joseph Carrier coming in and picking up where Hod left off as someone who was hustling on both offense and defense, making things happen that aren't reflected on the stat sheet.
At the 12 minute mark, Carrier would grab two offensive rebounds, and in the same possession, dished out an assist to senior guard Aaron Darab, who would knock down a three point attempt to make it a 19-15 game in favor of the Maccabees.
Cabezudo would further his aggressive play when he drove to the basket at 6:35 mark and converted a big layup in traffic to bring the score to 28-25. In the ensuing possession, DJ Tucker would grab a steal and take it to the rack to make it a one point game.
The momentum continued to sway in favor of the Dolphins, and that was furthered when Sean Goodwin would come off the bench and score a big three, capping off a 7-2 Dolphins run. A Cabezudo and-one layup would lead to the Dolphins getting their first lead at 2:27, but an 8-0 run to close out the first half by Yeshiva would put the Dolphins down eight at halftime.
The Maccabees would show why they're one of the top teams in the Skyline when they opened the second half with a 15-2 run. Each time the Dolphins would chip away, Yeshiva would come back and respond, resulting in a 24 point lead by the 11 minute mark.
To CMSV's credit, the team showed character by not giving up despite the score. Cabezudo and Tucker combined to score 13 second half points, continuing to make a strong impression in their first seasons in Riverdale.
The new duo would be the lone Dolphins to finish in double figures. Cabezudo would end his night with 18 points on eight of 14 shooting, along with six rebounds, three assists and a steal. Tucker had 12 points with a team-high 10 boards. Hod finish with nine points and seven rebounds of his own while Darab and Haven Smith had a combined 14 points.
The Dolphins will set their sights on St. Joseph's University Brooklyn, who they play host to on Wednesday.
