Riverdale, NY - After a break in action for the holidays, the Dolphins returned to action and made it count, as they picked up a home court win over Union College by the score of 79-72. James Mooney saw four of his players reach double figures in scoring, with a balanced offense and tenacious defense being the catalyst behind the win.
CMSV is now 4-7 overall in 2022.
It was all Dolphins to kick the game off on the Sharp Center floor, and DJ Tucker, the junior transfer who has emerged as one of CMSV's top players, had a big hand in his team's start. The Boynton Beach, Florida native scored four of the team's first nine points while also pulling down two rebounds and being active on the defensive end of the floor. The Dolphins saw their lead expand to 12 points off the back of senior guard Aaron Darab, who knocked down deep threes in back to back possessions.
From there, the Dutchmen would go on a 12-2 run of their own, making it a 19-15 contest. Dan Porcic, Joshua Cabezudo and George Mejia would all register points in a stretch that would bring CMSV's lead back up to six. The Dolphins and Union would battle on both ends of the floor for the duration of the half, with the score changing hands in a one possession game three times in the final three minutes of play.
Thanks to a buzzer beating layup at the hands of the Dutchmen, the visitors went into the locker room up by two.
Porcic's nine first half points - including going two of six from three - gave him over 500 for his CMSV career, a feat he accomplished in less than two seasons in Riverdale.
The second half picked up exactly where the first left off. The contest was a one possession game over the first six minutes of action, with the Dolphins seeing their lead reach four points after Porcic knocked down a three for his 18th point off the game, with the assist going to Darab. Union, however, would continue battling, eventually regaining a four point lead of their own. It was once again Porcic who helped the Dolphins close the gap when he made it 60-59 Dutchmen after yet another three.
CMSV would then get back on top at the 6:28 mark, when junior big Jack Connolley collected an offensive board off his own shot and converted a layup. The Dolphins would then get on top for good, and it was capped off when Tucker hit a three of his own to make it an eight point game with less than three minutes left. The home team would then make seven of their last eight free throw attempts to ice the game, with Tucker, Cabezudo and Darab all chipping in.
Porcic would end his evening with a team-best 26 points, including shooting 41% from beyond the arc. Tucker, meanwhile, would capture his third double-double of the year, taking down a season-high 14 boards while adding 18 points, a pair of assists and a steal.
Cabezudo continued his strong campaign for the Dolphins, with 15 points and seven rebounds on four of eight shooting, while Darab added 12 points of his own to go along with four steals, including one swipe in the waning minutes to seal the victory. Freshman George Mejia and junior Sean Goodwin provided valuable minutes off the bench.
Next up for the Dolphins is a full docket of Skyline Conference action, starting with a matchup against St. Joseph's University Long Island in the Sharp Center on January 7.
