Riverdale, NY – The Dolphins rebounded from a tough overtime Skyline matchup on Tuesday night when they took on Five Towns College. CMSV executed on both ends of the floor, en route to a 72-59 win that saw four players reach double figures.
The Dolphins were extremely active on the defensive end of the floor throughout the first half. Their consistent ball pressure and having hands in the passing lanes resulted in 14 Five Towns turnovers, with the Dolphins combining to score 19 points off of them. Two of those baskets came in impressive fashion; first it was top scoring threat
Dan Porcic, who stopped behind the three point line on a fast break attempt to knock down the shot, with
DJ Tucker following that up with a one handed slam – something that is becoming a regular occurrence in Dolphins' contests - after a
Sean Goodwin block.
Over that span, CMSV would see Tucker,
Joshua Cabezudo,
Aaron Darab and
Sean Goodwin combine for seven steals, en route to a 15-point lead.
To the Sound's credit, they wouldn't back down despite the early hole. Five Towns would go on a 9-0 run over their own between the 11
th and ninth minutes, cutting CMSV's lead to single digits. Both sides would trade baskets, but a late half surge from Cabezudo – which saw the junior guard score five straight points – helped elevate the Dolphins over the Sound by seven at the half.
There was a physical brand of basketball being played at the onset of the second half, as both CMSV and Five Towns traded foul calls on both ends of the floor. The lead remained the same for the Dolphins, with the starting lineup keeping the score in their team's favor.
The momentum began to swing, however, when
James Mooney employed the bench unit of Goodwin,
Brendan Cassidy,
Dillon Hod,
George Mejia and
Jalen Lewis.
The energy on the defensive end from the group was infectious. Not only did it engage the crowd even further, but the effort led to points. The Sharp Center was at its loudest when Hod stole a Five Towns pass, gathered the ball and found a floating Smith, who threw down one of the best alley-oop dunks you'll see. In the midst of that highlight slam was a stretch that saw Goodwin score eight points while Cassidy and Mejia did the dirty work both in the passing game and on the glass.
Mooney would then put his starters back in for extra work before walking away with the impressive 72-59 win.
Porcic, who has begun to regain his shooting stroke, and Tucker, a player who has emerged as someone who can do it all, led the charge with CMSV with 15 points apiece. Cabezudo played sparingly in the second half but continued his strong first season in Riverdale, adding 10 points to go along with a team-best 10 boards, good for his second double double of the season.
Goodwin scored a career-high 10 points on five of nine shooting, along with six rebounds, three blocks, two steals and a pair of assists. Hod and Lewis combined for 10 of their own while
Haven Smith and
Jack Connolley took down nine collective rebounds.
Non-conference play rolls on for CMSV, and next up is Defiance College. The Yellow Jackets will head to the Bronx on Monday in an afternoon battle inside the Sharp Center.
