Riverdale, NY - The College of Mount Saint Vincent's men's soccer team played in their first ever contest on the turf surface on Marillac Field on Wednesday, taking on Sarah Lawrence College in a Skyline showdown. Despite the Dolphins leading by two goals late into the contest, a pair of Gryphon goals and missed opportunities late in the game led to a 2-2 tie. The Dolphins are now 4-2-3 against the conference and remain in third place in the standings.
Everything was going in the Dolphins' favor throughout the first half. With the score at zero apiece,
Tommy Mattera's team did a tremendous job controlling possession while simultaneously ratting off shot attempts at the Gryphons, with the CMSV getting 17 total chances in the first half. With five minutes left on the clock, defenseman
Tyrone Malango finally put his team on the board as he challenged into the box, placing the ball past the diving goalkeeper before finishing with ease to give the senior his first goal of the year.
The second half opened as the first closed, as junior transfer
Nicholas Guardino got on the board for the first time in his CMSV career. The junior transfer accepted a strong pass from freshman
Donovan Speer and took an improbable shot at a narrow angle to get it past the Gyphons goalie and into the back of the net. Up two goals, the Dolphins kept up the pressure, but it was Sarah Lawrence who would tie things up just minutes apart. Both goals from the road team came off a free kick from midfield, with heavy traffic in front of the net causing shots to get past Dolphins goaltender
Joel Luna.
With just two minutes on the clock, CMSV had two fantastic chances to regain the lead - one from freshman
Augustus McGiff, whose goal was called back due to being offside, and the other off the head of Malango, who missed the net off a crosser from
Ian Lamas by inches - but time ended with the game tied up.
The Dolphins will look to return to the win column on Saturday when they take on Purchase College at home.
