Jersey City, NJ - CMSV's women's soccer team returned to the field for the first time since the 2019 season, taking on New Jersey City University on the road in a non-conference matchup. With a new coach in
Stuart Dick and a plethora of exciting talent on the roster, the expectations were sky-high for the opener. The Dolphins impressed in game one, coming from behind in the second half before ending things with an overtime tie against the Gothic Knights.
The starting lineup featured a ton of new faces, with
Meagan Meeuwisse,
Gabriela Del Castillo,
Amanda Cotroneo,
Alicia Rodriguez and
Riley Leedholm receiving their first starts in their CMSV careers. Both the Dolphins and Gothic Knights battled back and forth over the first 20 minutes of play, with each team's defense doing a strong job keeping the offenses at bay. At the 21 minute mark, NJCU got on the board, giving the home team an early goal advantage.
The defensive battle continued into the second half, but CMSV was clearly looking to take more advantages on offense, taking 11 more shots than they did in the first 45 minutes. In a two minute span starting at the 72 minute mark, the aggressiveness of the Dolphins paid off. Junior standout
Emily McCarthy took things into her own hands and buried two goals over that span, giving CMSV the 2-1 lead with time expiring. A late yellow card by CMSV resulted in a converted penalty shot for the Gothic Knights, with that being the final tally of the contest.
Meeuwisse had a fanstastic game in net, saving 13 of the 15 shots she faced. McCarthy took 13 shots in addition two her two goals, while
Christine Laskowski and
Alicia Rodriguez received assists.
The Dolphins will now set their sights on the Pratt Institute, who they take on this coming week. You can watch the contest live right here on CMSVAthletics.com.
