Riverdale, NY - The Dolphins looked strong in a thrilling 2-1 victory over visitors Sarah Lawrence in the Dolphins first home game since 2019.
The first half was played as a chess match, as the two teams were testing one another. The teams split with one goal a piece with Sarah Lawrence getting the first goal with 18 minutes left in the half. The Dolphins would respond two minutes later, withÂ
Lilli Marin sliding in a through ball to senior
Cristina Britton who scored with a powerful effort from outside of the box.
The second half was replicated the first, with chances coming on both ends. The Dolphins defense, led by Senior captain
Lauren Vetoulis contained Sarah Lawrence's attack and progressed the play. Dolphins keeper
Kora-Lynn McCullough shined throughout the game making 8 saves. Both teams ended regular time tied at one and entered the extra time period.
The first half of extra time produced close calls, as Britton blocked a clearance from the Sarah Lawrence keeper which rolled towards the open cage until the keeper gathered the ball. The Dolphins started the second period of extra time on the front foot, registering four straight shots. The game looked to be over going into the last five seconds untilÂ
Amanda Cotroneo
slid in a through ball to
Emily McCarthy, who dinked the ball over the keeper off the top left corner and into the net as time expired.
The Dolphins head coach
Stuart Dick spoke on his team going the extra mile that his players went in the second half of extra time. "We basically told them they just had to keep going, they were performing really well towards the end of the first half when he got the ball down and played. We needed to get away from it being a kick and run game. I think fitness for us was massive. We looked slightly faster towards the end of the game and that comes from all the hard work the ladies are putting in. The girls don't give up, they come back every single time they have that belief that they can go in games anytime. Give me 100%. For example this game with six seconds left on the clock some believe we are done but the team won't give up that easily. That's why they went on to win the game."
The Dolphins will be back in action on September 29 when visitors Pratt Institute come to Marillac Field for a non conference matchup.
