Box Score 2 Union, NJ - For the first time since November of 2019, the College of Mount Saint Vincent's women's volleyball team returned to action. The 2018 Skyline Conference champions opened their 2021 season on the road in New Jersey, participating in a non-conference tri-match against Kean University and Centenary University. The Dolphins split the event, giving them a 1-1 record.
CMSV first matched up against Kean, who was awarded the victory in three sets. Despite the outcome, the Dolphins kept things close, losing each set by no more than seven points.
Dez Brown,
Madison Gale,
Rianna Rivera and
Samantha Schroeder reprised their roles as cornerstones of the program, with all four upper classmen playing in all three sets. Gale paced the Dolphins with 7.5 points, including four kills, 13 assists and three service aces. Schroeder added five kills of her own while Brown and Rivera made an impact in the middle of the court.
The story for the Dolphins was the debuts of sophomores
Elizabeth Flores,
Isabella Garcia and
Melanieann Broderick, each of whom earned the start against the Cougars. Flores registered a team-high six kills while Garcia secured 13 digs.
CMSV quickly regrouped, as they matched up against the Cyclones and emerged victorious in four sets by the scores of 25-12, 25-9, 25-23 and 25-17.
This time around it was senior
Lindsay DeBoer who was the standout Dolphin after leading the way with 11 kills. Junior
Brianna Ayuso impressed in the setter roll, registering 23 assists, three service aces and two blocks throughout the four sets. Freshman
Lydia Aryee got her first taste of collegiate action and collected four kills while Rivera put up 10.5 points in the win.
The Dolphins will continue to gain chemistry after a long layoff this coming weekend when they head to Pennsylvania to compete against Wilkes University and Marywood University in another non-conference tri-match. Follow the action live right here on CMSVAthletics.com.
