Yaphank, NY - The College of Mount Saint Vincent's baseball team dropped both games in their home opening double header on Sunday against the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. The pair of games comes off the heels of the Dolphins' first two contests of the 2020 season that took place on Saturday when they swept Bard College in a road matchup.
CMSV's offense impressed in game one, with the team totaling 12 hits, with eight of the nine members of the starting lineup recording at least one hit. Reigning Skyline Conference Rookie of the Year
Michael Grisanti was tied for the team lead with two hits. Sophomore
Jordan Perykasz and freshman
Allan Santana had two apiece as well. Grisanti, Perykasz, Santana,
Eric Zimmermann, Nick Saraczak and
Matt DiNorcia accounted for each of the Dolphins' six runs scored.
Pedro Fortoso allowed four runs in the first inning but freshman
Andrew Geiger was able to settle things down over 5.1 innings of work. Senior
Tyler Reyes made his first appearance of the season in the contest as well.
After the Dolphins went into an early 4-0 hole in the top of the first, the offense slowly brought the team back into the game. A DiNorcia single to left field brought home Zimmermann to get CMSV on the board in the bottom of the second. Both Grisanti and Zimmermann plated runs in the following inning to cut MCLA's lead to just one run. Despite continuing to come from behind, the Trail Blazers were too tough to overcome, resulting in the 8-6 loss.
Unlike the first game, the second contest of the day was a pitchers' duel. Freshman
Joe Decandia made his collegiate debut and had an impressive outing. The Beacon, NY native scattered nine hits over 5.2 innings and allowed just three runs while striking out four. Both Reyes and
Humberto Vela combined 1.1 scoreless frames. The bats were held quiet by MCLA, with Grisanti, Perykasz, Saraczak and
Jake Blinstrub recorded one hit each. The Dolphins jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the second inning off the bat of Saranczak, who belted his first home run of the year which drove in Santana. But from there it was all MCLA, who ended up escaping with the one run victory.
The Dolphins will be back in action this Tuesday and will look to get back in the win column on the road against the College of Staten Island. First pitch is scheduled for 4 PM.
