Old Westbury, NY - The College of Mount Saint Vincent's men's basketball team were looking to extend their winning streak to two on Saturday afternoon when they traveled to Long Island to take on SUNY Old Westbury. The Dolphins were also looking to avenge their early season loss to the Panthers when they played on the Peter Jay Sharp Center court earlier in January.
The first 20 minutes of play couldn't have gone better for
James Mooney and his team, as they scored 47 points on 56% shooting while holding the Panthers to just 31 points. The Dolphins also went six of 12 from beyond the arc while gaining the edge in both rebounds and assists. CMSV also forced 13 turnovers.
Makai Johnson had a strong first half for the second straight game, as he scored a team-high eight points and knocked down all three free throw attempts. Classmate
Vinny Tavella also tied for the team lead in first half points with eight while also pacing the Dolphins with three rebounds and three assists.
David Collins and
Kalos Evans came off the bench and scored six points apiece as well.
Unfortunately for the CMSV, the game was flipped in the second half. The Panthers stepped up on the defensive end as they forced the Dolphins to miss 17 of their 27 shot attempts and slowly chipped away at the large first half deficit. Despite the Dolphins doing their best to maintain the lead, a last minute three pointer at the buzzer was the deciding factor in Old Westbury's favor.
The Dolphins received contributons from everyone in their rotation.
Raiquis Harris ended his afternoon with a team-best 12 points while Johnson, Tavella, Collins and
Kelvin Turner-Harris all finished in double figures. Collins paced his team in the rebounds department with six while Tavella recorded four assists, also a team high.
CMSV now turns their attention to St. Joseph's College - Brooklyn, who they'll host this coming Tuesday at 8 PM.
