Box Score Riverdale, NY - The College of Mount Saint Vincent's men's basketball team returned to the Peter Jay Sharp Center court on Tuesday evening, a place where they won their last game just six days ago over Sarah Lawrence College. The Dolphins were looking to pick up another win in front of their home fans, this time against Skyline Conference opponent St. Joseph's College - Long Island.
The first two minutes of the first half saw CMSV fall into an early hole when the Golden Eagles scored in three straight possessions, making it a 7-2 game. From there, both sides traded baskets until the 12:34 mark, when junior guard Makai Johnson knocked down his third three pointer of the game to make it a three point game in favor of the Dolphins.
The last lead St. Joe's would see in the half would be at the 12 minute mark - from there, it was all CMSV. The Dolphins scored in five of the next six possessions, including a three point barrage that saw Johnson, Raiquis Harris, Qwame Thompson and Dorian Robinson each knock down shots from beyond the arc.
Over the first 20 minutes of play, Johnson scored a game-high 19 points on seven of eight shooting while the Dolphins as a whole converted 11 of 19 three point attempts. Robinson and Kalos Evans came off the bench and combined for 13 points while Harris added four boards.
The second half saw a much more balanced basketball game. The Golden Eagles went on a 7-0 run early in the half but the Dolphins' first half lead kept them in front. After CMSV regained a double digit edge with 11:17 to go, St. Joe's came surging back, scoring 15 points to the Dolphins' six to bring the score to 69-65 in favor of the home team.
Fortunately for the Dolphins, clutch free throws with a little more than a minute remaining were the difference, as CMSV walked away with the 82-72 victory.
Johnson's scoring surge in the first half kept him in front of all Dolphins with 22 points. Senior big David Collins posted a season-high 18 points to go along with nine boards and two assists while Harris finished with 17 points and nine rebounds. Robinson came off the bench and dished out three assists, a team best.
Winners of three in their last five games, the Dolphins now turn their attention to Old Westbury, who they take on this Saturday at noon.
