Riverdale, NY - The College of Mount Saint Vincent's men's basketball team played on the Peter Jay Sharp Center court for the first time since their big South Division win over Farmingdale State, this time taking on Skyline Conference foe Manhattanville College. The Dolphins were looking to keep their winning ways alive on Wednesday night, both at home and within the conference.
Both the Dolphins and Valiants battled back and forth on their respective offensive ends, with the first 15 minutes of play being a one possession game. Over that span, it was the backcourt duo of Raiquis Harris and Makai Johnson who combined for 15 of the team's first 19 points. Their play was highlighted when Johnson knocked down a big three off a strong pass from Harris to give CMSV a four point advantage at 15:48.
Kelvin Turner-Harris came off the bench and helped his team continue their strong offensive half, as he poured in back-to-back three pointers in consecutive possessions, one off a pass from big Mamadou Mariko and another from standout sophomore Kalos Evans. The Valiants did their best to keep it close, but the Dolphins had an answer at every turn. The James Mooney-led squad entered the locker rooms at halftime up 29-23.
Johnson paced all scorers with eight first half points while Harris added seven of his own. Mariko once again dominated the boards with a team-high five rebounds over the first 20 minutes of play while he and Qwame Thompson combined for four assists.
The Dolphins helped keep Manhattanville scoreless over the first three minutes of the second half, but the Valiants responded with a quick 7-0 run to bring the game within three. Turner-Harris once again hit an impressive shot, this time an isolation jumper, to bring CMSV's lead back to five with 16:13 left to play. Both teams once again traded baskets making it a one possession contest, but both Thompson and David Collins hit tough shots in consecutive possessions to help keep their team in front over the next six minutes. When Manhattanville once again evened the score, it was Harris who helped the Dolphins get back on top after nailing a jumper, making it 47-45.
The back and forth continued, making the game tied at 50 with an even three minutes left in regulation. The following two possessions saw Evans score, both with a tough jumper and a fast break layup, to put CMSV back up by four. Manhattanville then made it a one point contest with a three pointer, but Thompson answered the Valiants with a three of his own as the shot clock expired with 47 seconds remaining. To Manhattanville's credit, they battled in the final seconds, tying things up with .4 seconds left to force overtime.
In similar fashion to the first half, it was the Johnson and Harris show in overtime. Over the first three minutes of extra play, the duo combined for all seven of the team's points over that span. The Valiants took their first overtime lead at the 54 second mark, and unfortunately for the Dolphins, the visitors escaped Riverdale with a 71-67 win.
Harris, the team's leading scorer, once again finished with a team-high 25 points on 10-21 shooting. He also added nine rebounds, five steals and three assists to the stat sheet. Both Evans (11) and Johnson (10) finished in double figures while Thompson finished with six points, seven boards, three assists and three steals. Turner-Harris finished with eight points off the bench.
The Dolphins (5-10, 2-4) will now look towards Saturday's matchup against Purchase College on Saturday to right the ship.
