Dolphins Battle, Ultimately Fall To Knights

Box Score

Riverdale, NY - On Tuesday, the College of Mount Saint Vincent's women's basketball team played host to Mount Saint Mary College in a battle of two of the top four teams in the Skyline Conference.

It was a back and forth battle in Riverdale over the first 10 minutes of play that saw both teams trade leads throughout the duration of the quarter, with a physical brand of basketball on display. The Dolphins lead ballooned to as much as seven points before the Knights were able to battle back and get within one possession before time expired. Newcomer Victoria Hanley was all over the box score, as she led her team in points, assists and steals to help give her a team a 23-17 lead.

The second quarter saw the Dolphins fall victim to sloppy play on the offensive end, as they shot just 17% from the floor, including missing all six of their three point attempts. The Knights took their first lead of the quarter at 5:30 to bring the score to 29-27. The lead didn't last long, however, as an Ashley Martin jumper just seconds later tied things back up. While the Dolphins battled in the final minutes before halftime, two big threes from Mount Saint Mary gave them a four point edge going into the locker rooms.

The Dolphins and Knights continued their hard fought battle into the third quarter that saw both teams keep the score within one possession. Standout senior DarNeisha Brice knotted things up when she hit her second consecutive three after an assist from Gabriela Goldman. The Dolphins then regained their lead during the following possession when Hanley converted a layup. But despite Brice's 11 third quarter points, the Knights excelled on offense as well, as they entered the final quarter of play with a four point lead. While the Dolphins kept it close, the toughness of the Knights ultimately won out, as the visitors were victorious by the score of 75 to 63.

Hanley impressed in only her second game with the Dolphins, as she stuffed the stat sheet with 19 points, seven rebounds, six steals and three assists. Brice led the way with 21 points, including six of 14 from beyond the arc. Both Aria Rheams and Kiera Villegas paced the team with eight boards apiece.

CMSV now turns their attention to the United States Merchant Marine Academy, who they host on Thursday. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
