Dolphins Draw Against Colonials

Box Score Riverdale, NY – The Women's Soccer team took Marillac field on Wednesday afternoon looking to advance to 2-0 on the season against last year's Little East Conference Champion Western Connecticut. After a great start the Woman fell just short of doing so as the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

In the first half of play the Colonials came out firing ripping off five shots in the opening five minutes of play. Kora-Lynn McCullough would answer the call and turn all the shots away and register five early saves. Defense would turn to offense as the Dolphins earned a corner kick on the counterattack which resulted in a goal for Madison Schultz who buried it herself from the corner in the seventh minute of play. Western Connecticut would continue to put pressure on but could not put any of their shots on target. The 1-0 score would hold and the Dolphins would take the one goal lead into the break.

The Colonials continued to put the pressure on but McCullough answered the call time and time again with highlight reel saves. Western Connecticut would eventually break through to knot the game up at one in the 55th minute. The teams both locked in defensively from here on, McCullough continued to hold her line to keep the Colonials from taking the lead. The score would hold throughout regulation and to overtime we went.

The first overtime period saw the Dolphins defense bend but not break. Julia Leggett made the play of the day on the back line to prevent the game winner from finding the back of the net. The second overtime period was much of the same, McCullough making multiple saves and Leggett saving the day once again on a tremendous play on the goal line. Thanks to the fantastic defensive effort today's match would end in a draw.  The Woman will hold their heads up high after today's contest verse a very talented Colonial squad.

The Dolphins will have a few days' rest before they look to get back to their winning ways this Saturday against Lehman College right here on Marillac at 1PM. The Women now sit a 1-0-1 overall record.
