Riverdale, NY – After a tough road loss to New York University on Wednesday night, the College of Mount Saint Vincent's volleyball team returned to the Peter Jay Sharp Center court on Friday, looking to get their first home victory of 2019. The Dolphins did just that, defeating non-conference John Jay College three sets to zero, improving their overall record to 7-5 on the season.
Although CMSV came away with the three set victory, the Dolphins started off slow on Friday night. The first set saw the Dolphins jump out quickly to a 7-2 lead and they would manage to keep their distance throughout the entire set until they got to match point. CMSV led 24-18 but here came the Bloodhounds, rattling off five straight points to shrink the deficit to just one point. John Jay would send the next serve out of bounds and CMSV would hold on and win the first set of the evening. The middles led the way as
Dez Brown had four kills and a block in the opening set wile
Lindsay DeBoer added three kills of her own.
The first set scare would wake up the Dolphins as they found their grove, winning the second and third sets handily (25-17,25-15). In the gym you could feel the team pick their energy up and get a full team effort, with Brown and DeBoer continuing to lead the way as they finished with eight kills each which led the team. Also adding contributions on the defensive end were
Tara Maloney and
Gabriella Maggi, who had 10 and seven digs respectively.
The Dolphins will now dive into conference play this coming Monday night right here at Peter Jay Sharp when they take on conference rivals Mount Saint Mary. CMSV now sits at an overall record of 7-5 and a Skyline Conference record of 1-0.
