Yaphank, NY - The College of Mount Saint Vincent's softball team wrapped up Skyline Conference competition on Sunday afternoon when they traveled to Yaphank to take on St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn with playoff seeding implications on the line. If the Dolphins won at least one game, they'd be awarded the fourth seed; but if the Bears swept CMSV, they'd overtake their opponents and host this upcoming Wednesday. Fortunately for the Dolphins, they split with the Bears, giving them home field advantage in the first round of the playoffs.
The first game saw CMSV's offense working early and often to ensure the 11-6 victory. The Dolphins got on the board immediately as they plated two runs in the bottom of the first inning. First it was
Sophia Herrera, whose double through the left side drove home
Erin Patterson. From there,
Taylor Milata singled in Herrer to give the team a two-run edge. The Bears wouldn't let the lead stand for long, as they combined for three runs in the top of the second to take a 3-2 lead. But that was the last time the Bears would be out in front, as the Dolphins' bats continued to rake throughout the contest. Between the next two innings, CMSV scored six runs. The first came off the bat of senior
Katie Moos, who hit a two RBI single to regain her team's lead. From there,
Breeze-Lyn Morita, Patterson and Herrera combined to drive in four runs to extend CMSV's lead to 8-3. Before the game concluded, Milata (one) and Herrera (two) had three RBI for insurance.
Hannah Thompson,
Ashley Faccilonga and
Kayla Pagano all pitched well for their team.
After a high scoring first game, the second contest was a full on pitchers' duel, with the score being 1-0 in favor of the Bears. The duo of
Meagan Earley and Kimebrly Medina pitched admirably, allowing just nine hits along the way. The offense, however, struggled, as Morita was the lone Dolphin to reach base in the game.
Now that the playoffs are set, these two teams will square off one more time - this time, to open the Skyline Conference postseason. The game is scheduled for Wednesday with the start time and locaiton to be announced at a later date.
