Wilkes Barre, PA - The women's lacrosse team hit the road on Thursday afternoon and headed to Pennsylvania to take on non-conference opponent Wilkes University. The ladies were going into the contest winners of their last two and were looking to win three straight. Despite a tough battle, the women fell by the score of 10-6.
After a long bus ride, CMSV got off to a slow start against Wilkes. The Colonels scored the first four goals of the game before the Dolphins' Veronica Sevivas found the back of the net to make it 4-1. Wilkes' offense was not done yet as they rattled off a three goal run to a take a commanding 7-1 lead into halftime. Despite the score, the Dolphins' Caitlin Elia was flying around in the first half, causing three turnovers and winning four draw controls.
The Dolphins came to play in the second half, with junior Paulina Mandujano striking first in the third quarter and set the tone. Wilkes would answer with two goals of their own to extend their lead to 9-2. But here came CMSV with a quick three goal run, putting the Dolphins right back in the contest. During the run, Mandujano and Sevivas both got their second goals of the day while Amy Cohen registered her first. With six minutes still remaining, there was plenty of time for the Dolphins to pull out the victory, but after three minutes of scoreless play, Wilkes found the back of the net to take a 10-5 lead. CMSV would eventually add one off an Elia goal but it would be too late. Goalie Allyson Weakliem had another strong performance for the Dolphins with 13 saves on the day.
The women will be looking to bounce right back as they play this Saturday at Mitchell College in Connecticut. CMSV now sits at an overall record of 2-2.
