Clermont, FL - The College of Mount Saint Vincent's softball team wrapped up their Spring Break trip in Florida on Saturday afternoon. Taking on both the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts and Westfield State University, the lady Dolphins split their two contests and will head back to New York with an overall record of 3-7.
CMSV took on MCLA in the first contest of the afternoon and fell to the Trail Blazers by the score of 9-4. MCLA got off to a hot start, as they scored six runs in the first inning, putting the game out of reach before it could really get started. Starter
Kayla Pagano, however, settled down and let her team slowly crawl back into the contest. In the second inning,
Deanna Nardi hit a sacrifice fly to put her team on the board. In the following inning,
Sophia Herrera added two RBI to the stat sheet when she drove in both
Taylor Milata and
Katie Moos to cut MCLA's lead in half. The scoring continued into the fourth inning when
Erin Patterson's ground out scored
Breeze-Lyn Morita, making the game 6-4. Unfortunately for the Dolphins, MCLA added three more runs to put the finishing touches on their victory.
After a rest in between games, CMSV got back on the field to take on Westfield State. Unlike in game one, it was the Dolphins who struck first when
Alanna Alioto-Reyes drove in Milata for a third inning run. After the Owls tied things up in the top of the fourth, Milata and freshman
Abigail Laurendeau drove in two runs each in the bottom half of the inning, giving CMSV a four run advantage. Westfield State did their best to get back into the game, scoring three runs over the fifth and sixth innings, but a strong pitching performance from
Hannah Thompson allowed the Dolphins to keep the lead for good, winning by the score of 5-4.
CMSV will return to campus on Saturday and immediately prepare for a tough double header against Montclair State University that will take place on March 19. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
