Riverdale, NY - The College of Mount Saint Vincent's men's basketball team returned to Riverdale after a successful road trip to California over Thanksgiving break that saw the Dolphins capture their first two wins of the season, bringing their overall record to 2-4. CMSV looked to bring their winning ways back home; but despite an extremely hard fought battle, the Dolphins untimately fell with seconds to spare, losing to New York University on the Peter Jay Sharp Center court by the score of 74-70. .
The first half was as intense a battle as they come, with both sides trading buckets back and forth. With things knotted up at eight apiece, Kelvin Tuner Harris came off the bench and knocked down a big three pointer off an assist from
Makai Johnson, bringing the score to 12-11 Dolphins.
From there, both CMSV and the Violets continued to exchange one point leads until NYU was able to break out and take a seven point lead at the four minute mark, turning the tide in the visitors' favor. Junior
Qwame Thompson then provided a major spark off the bench, where he scored a fast break layup, hit a three and caused a turnover on three straight possessions, leading his team to a 7-0 run to close out the half with everything tied at 35.
Raiquis Harris, CMSV's leading scorer, paced his team with nine points apiece on four of six shooting. Bigs
Mamadou Mariko and
Vinny Tavella combined for 12 points, with Mariko adding six boards to his stat sheet.
The final 20 minutes of the contest mirrored the first, with both sides battling and close scores featured throughout. With the Violets up five points in the final three minutes,
Raiquis Harris hit a massive three to bring the deficit within two. Both Tavella and
Makai Johnson hit key baskets in the final two minutes, but a late free throw by NYU put the game out of reach for good. As a whole, the Dolphins shot an impressive 45% from the floor while knocking down five free throws in nine chances. Harris led the way with 20 points while also adding four steals, three rebounds and three assists. Both Mariko and
Kalos Evans paced the Dolphins with seven rebounds apiece. Johnson worked as a floor general and it was reflected in the stats, as he put up a team-high five assists.
The Dolphins, now 2-5, will look to rebound on Monday when they travel to Ramapo College. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
