Late Game Struggles Doom Dolphins Against NJCU

Box Score

Jersey City, NJ - The College of Mount Saint Vincent's men's basketball team traveled across the Hudson River on Tuesday evening to compete in a non-conference matchup against New Jersey City University, one of the better team's in the NJAC in recent years. Both team's entered the game looking for their first win of the season; unfortunately for the Dolphins, it was the Gothic Knights who emerged victorious, winning by the score of 81-62.

The Dolphins started slow in the first half, as they hit just three of their 10 field goals over the first 10 minutes of play while allowing NJCU to convert 42% of their shot attempts. Before exiting due to foul trouble, senior Raiquis Harris did his best to keep the team in the game, as he scored a team-high seven points during that span. CMSV settled down over the final 10 minutes of the first half and played arguably their best brand of basketball thus far, as they forced bad shots and clamped down on defense while going five of 10 from beyond the arc, as well as converting all 14 of their free throw attempts. Senior David Collins (eight points) and sophomore Dorian Robinson (five points, four rebounds) were both sparks off the bench, resulting in a 41-37 score at halftime.

The theme of competitive basketball continued into the second half. NJCU took an eight point lead at the 12 minute mark but back to back three pointers from Harris and Robinson brought the Dolphins within one possession. After more back and forth play, it was Mamadou Mariko who hit his first three ball of the year to tie things up at 57 with nine minutes left on the clock. Unfortunately, this is where things turned around for the Gothic Knights. The home team applied a full court press, caused four straight turnovers and went on a 20-0 run to put things out of reach for good.

Harris went five of 13 from the floor and scored a team-high 17 points while adding four rebound and three steals. Makai Johnson and Kelvin Turner-Harris went a combined 14 of 16 from the charity stripe, good for 10 and nine points, respectively.

The Dolphins, who now sit at 0-3 on the season, will open Skyline Conference play on Saturday night when they play host to conference championship runner-up Yeshiva University. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:30 PM.
