Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Dolphins Hold Off Brewers For First Win Of 2018

Riverdale, N.Y. - The men's basketball team traveled to Poughkeepsie to take on Vassar College in hopes of taking home their first win of the season. CMSV dropped their first three contests, one of which was against Division I New Hampshire. The other two were against top tier division three teams. CMSV came out hungry for their first win, making all of the hustle plays necessary to compete with the much bigger Vassar team. Sophomore Vincent Tavella was tasked with guarding the Brewers 6'10 center, and in the first half, held the big man to seven first half points on 30% shooting. Tavella's great effort led the Dolphins to a 39-27 half time lead. Another strong first half performance came from senior Mamadou Mariko, who played solid defense and added five points for the Dolphins.

The Brewers got the inside game going a little bit early in the second half. The Brewers cut the lead to three multiple times but these runs were answered by big shots from the Dolphins. The first big shot came from freshman Kalos Evans and the next run was answered by back to back jumpers from junior Brian Brooks. But the Brewers just kept on coming, scoring multiple big threes and a steal and a layup from Vassar's Alex Seff cut the Dolphins lead to one with eight minutes to go in the second half.

Vassar would eventually tie the game up at 56 with five minutes remaining in the game. The teams traded a few baskets and Vassar got their first lead of the second half at 65-62, but Tavella nailed a huge three to tie the game up at 65 with just 45 seconds on the clock. The following possession, junior star guard Raiquis Harris took the lead back with a pretty euro-step on the break. Stellar defense from Tavella forced a Vassar turnover and made the Brewers start fouling with 30 seconds on the clock. Harris hit two big free throws to push the lead to four. Two more big free throws down the stretch by Evans put the game out of reach and the Dolphins held on for their first win of the season by the score of 71-66.

CMSV now has a nine day break before they take the court again. CMSV will host St. Joseph's Brooklyn November 29 for their first Skyline Conference action of the season. The Dolphins are currently sitting with a record of 1-3.
