Riverdale, N.Y. - The College of Mount Saint Vincent's men's basketball team opened their 2018-19 season on the road against Division I University of New Hampshire on Monday afternoon. Despite keeping the game relatively close throughout the first half of play, the Dolphins ultimately fell to the superior opponent, dropping game one by the score of 100-61.
With CMSV losing eight players to graduation a last May - including five big-time contributors - Coach
James Mooney boasted a new starting lineup to begin the season, with sophomores
Vinny Tavella and
Makai Johnson and senior
Mamadou Mariko joining
Raiquis Harris and
Jason Barrera (two starters from a year ago). Both Mariko (11 points, four rebounds, two assists) and Barrera (10 points) were the lone Dolphins to reach double figures, with the remaining three starters combining for 16 total points.
CMSV's bench also featured some strong production. Junior
Alex Medina added seven points, one rebounds and a steal to the stat sheet, while
Brian Brooks (six points, two rebounds, one assist) and
Joseph Reyes (six points, two rebounds) aided in the team's efforts. The freshmen duo of
Josh Pismeny and
Kalos Evans combined for four points in their collegiate debuts.
The Dolphins will have some time to regroup and get back on track over the next few days. They will return to the court on November 17 when they travel to Massachusetts to take on Williams College. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 PM.
