Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Comeback Falls Short Against Panthers

The Background
  • Final Score: College of Mount Saint Vincent 2, Purchase College 4.
  • Records: College of Mount Saint Vincent (1-11, 0-6 Skyline), Purchase (4-3-2, 2-1-1 Skyline).
  • Where: Athletic Field, Riverdale, New York.
How It Happened
  • The first half of the game got off to a slow start with many great defensive plays. Sophomore Ruslan Matthews had one of his best games to date, as he made many key plays on the back end. The first half ended with zeros on the scoreboard for both teams.
  • The second half was played at entirely different pace and featured six goals. The Panthers came out ready to go and scored on a set piece just 29 seconds into the half to take the one goal lead.
  • Purchase was not done yet as they netted another goal five minutes later to take a 2-0 lead with 40 minutes remaining in the half. Scoring slowed down during the middle of the half until Purchase struck again to take a commanding 3-0 lead.
  • Trailing 3-0, Mount Saint Vincent flipped a switch on and went into full attack mode. The Dolphins scored two goals within two minutes of each other to get within one with seven minutes remaining. The first goal for the Dolphins was scored by sophomore captain Luciano Cirelli on a free kick from way outside the box. The second came from Ardijan Berisha, who got his foot on a loose ball in the box and buried it in the back of the net.
  • With time dwindling away, Purchase played a big through ball and got a break away goal to extend the lead to 4-2, officially putting an end to CMSV's comeback effort.
What's Next?
  • The Dolphins are back in action on October 8 against York College in a non-conference matchup. They will be looking to right the ship and snap the current nine game losing streak.
