Men’s Soccer Ties St. Joseph’s in Skyline Thriller, 2-2

RIVERDALE, N.Y.  – The College of Mount Saint Vincent's Men's Soccer team battled to a 2-2 draw against Skyline Conference rival St. Joseph's College – Long Island at Marillac Field.

In the first half, the Dolphins (4-3-1, 2-0-1 Skyline) dominated the opening 20 minutes, grabbing the early 1-0 advantage and holding the Golden Eagles (2-5-1, 2-0-1 Skyline) without a single shot.
Senior center midfielder Andrew Gomez put the hosts in front in the 13th minute, after dribbling past two defenders and lacing a shot into the right side of the net.

Though the visitors eventually drew even in the 31st minute, Mount Saint Vincent re-claimed the lead just before the half.

With just 1:27 remaining in the period, junior midfielder Jose Mendoza fired a long shot from the left flank past the outstretched arms of St. Joseph's keeper Steven Deng to send the Dolphins into the break with a 2-1 edge.

In the latter half, the back line for Mount Saint Vincent stood strong and limited the Golden Eagles to only one shot on goal in the first 30 minutes.

However, St. Joseph's eventually forced overtime with a stunning goal in the 81st minute. Sophomore forward Damian Duda re-directed a Kyle Conway free kick from just outside the box over the hands of CMSV sophomore keeper Padelis Astrinidis for the equalizer.

In extra time, freshman center midfielder Colin Bhat had a golden opportunity for the Dolphins in the final minute of the second-overtime period, but Deng came up with the save to preserve the tie.

Between the pipes, Astrinidis finished with three saves for Mount Saint Vincent, while Deng stopped seven shots for St. Joseph's.

Head Coach Maxx Wurzburger and the Dolphins return to action on Saturday, September 30, 2017, when they host Mount Saint Mary College in a Skyline Conference tilt at Marillac Field at 12 p.m. in Riverdale.
