Dolphins Season Ends In Skyline Semifinals

#4 Dolphins fall to top-seeded Old Westbury

OLD WESTBURY, NY - The CMSV Women's Basketball team returned to action on Thursday night, traveling to Long Island to take on No. 1-seed Old Westbury in a semifinal matchup of the Skyline Conference Women's Basketball Championships. The Panthers controlled the glass and advanced to the Finals, with a 71-57 victory over the Dolphins, ending their 2016-17 season.

Senior Christina Barone scored a game-high 20 points in her final collegiate game, while Kristen Merrell added 13 points for the Mount. They were the only Dolphins to reach double figures, while three players scored 13 or more points for the the Panthers.

The first quarter went back and forth for the duration, despite CMSV only shooting 26% from the field. Their defense kept them close, as they forced eight turnovers in the first 10 minutes and trailed by one at the end of the period.

Old Westbury took control in the second quarter, thanks to shooting 8-of-11 from the free throw line and a distinct advantage on the glass. The Panthers grabbed nearly as many offensive rebounds (8), as CMSV grabbed in total for the quarter (9). The Panthers outscored the Dolphins 22-12 to take a 35-24 lead into the locker room.

Once play resumed in the third quarter, the Dolphins immediately cut the lead down to seven points after scoring six of the first eight points. But that would be as close as they would get for they would get for the remainder of the game.

The Panthers continued to dominate the rebounding margin, grabbing a staggering 18 offensive rebounds in the second half, led by Monique Joseph and Charlotte Renker, who each grabbed five apiece.

The Dolphins would cut the lead down to seven once in the fourth quarter, but the couldn't find the touch from 3-point land as they only connected on 2-of-11 from distance in the final frame.

The Dolphins wrap up the 2016-17 season with an 18-9 record, the fourth straight season with 17 or more wins.
