THROGGS NECK, NY - The CMSV Men's Basketball returned to action on Friday night, traveling across the Bronx to take on Skyline Conference foe SUNY Maritime.
Khalil Shorter sank two free throws with 0.1 seconds left in the game to force overtime, where the Dolphins would outscore the Privateers 22-11 and earn a 101-90 victory improving to 7-17 overall and 5-10 in conference play.
Four Mount players scored in double figures, led by
Myron Hickman who scored 17 points.
Jason Barrera scored 16 points, while
Andrew Curiel and
Austin Mick each chipped in with 12 points apiece.
Things didn't start well for the Dolphins, as they were held scoreless for over five minutes of action to start the game and found themselves down 16-0 before their first basket.
The offense finally started to get going but it was looking like the poor start would be to much to overcome.
Down 11 with 4:50 left, the Mount connected on back-to-back 3-pointers by Hickman and
Jesse Regina to get right back into it. Barrera would throw one down on the break to pull the Mount within three at 36-33 with just over 3 minutes left before halftime and Hickman would score the final six CMSV points of the half to pull his side within two points at the break.
The second half went back and forth for the opening 10 minutes of play, with each team trading baskets and no lead growing to larger than three points.
However, at the 8:05 mark Maritime went up by seven at 69-62 but once again the Dolphins answered scoring the next 10 points to take a 70-69 lead with five minutes left in the game.
Curiel would bury a jumper with 1:27 left to give the Dolphins a 77-76 lead but Patrick MacDonald connected on a free throw to tie the game at 77 with 40 seconds left.
The game came down to the final possession and with three seconds left, John Liccese looked to have hit the game winner with 2.9 seconds left but after a CMSV turnover, the Privateers turned it over and fouled Shorter with less than a second left. The senior from Staten Island calmly stepped to the line and drained both to force overtime.
In overtime the Dolphins took control at the 2:40 mark when Curiel made a layup, then on the next possession, Hickman buried a 3-pointer to give CMSV a six point lead, which they would not relinquish. The Dolphins would make their free throws down the stretch to earn the victory.
